Through our partners Inspirandum we offer a fully comprehensive range of PRINCE2 ceritified courses and workshops: -

PRINCE2 Practical Project Techniques

PRINCE2 is a powerful project method. It includes very basic information on a few techniques and illustrates a few more, but otherwise it expects you to go out and find suitable project techniques elsewhere together with instruction on how to use them. Inspirandum gives you that ‘elsewhere’ with a powerful package of techniques that work particularly well in a PRINCE based project.

This fast paced, fun and highly practical 3 day course includes product planning which is incorporated into the method but which is often poorly taught on PRINCE practitioner courses (not Inspirandum’s!) resulting in practitioners just not seeing how to get the power out of this approach. Added to that are a range of proven techniques for activity planning, the business case, risk analysis progress control and version control. A lot of time is given over to ‘hands on’ practical work to develop the skills you need to use the techniques, and use them with confidence.

PRINCE2 gives you the structure. This course fleshes it out with powerful, proven project techniques to help get the job done. The extensive practical work means that you leave with the confidence that you can go back to a project and use them well.

Who should attend this course?

The course is for Project Managers, Team Managers and Project Support staff involved with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of project planning and control. It is anticipated, but not necessary, that those attending will be familiar with the PRINCE2 method.

Inspirandum’s clear delivery style makes this event effective where those attending have English as a second language. We work worldwide with English speaking audiences or with translation.

PRINCE2 and Planning for the Project Board

PRINCE2 Project Board training is without doubt the most important in our PRINCE portfolio. So many organisations think that adopting PRINCE in the organisation means training their Project Managers. In reality, the Project Board is of vital importance in the successful implementation of PRINCE. But we must give a warning that these courses are quite hard hitting and we don't even try to 'pull our punches'. Project Board members must face up to their responsibilities and the course faces delegates with the sort of management decisions that they will need to make on their projects.

The analogy we draw on the course is with senior managers in a department in an organisation. Those managers are responsible for the department. In the same way, the Project Board members must 'own' the project and take their responsibilities and decision making very seriously.

But we also show the power of PRINCE and how it is a genuine help in the project if understood properly and then used intelligently. So many organisations have misunderstood PRINCE and think it is just some system of project documentation and proceed to use it that way. A senior manager on an Inspirandum PRINCE Project Board course in a financial organisation commented afterwards .

We show you the business justification for PRINCE and the very real power in this method through two variants of this important course:

  • A one day course for Project Board members who are already familiar with product and activity project planning techniques.
  • A two day course for Project Board members who are not familiar with project planning techniques. This adds sessions on planning so that Project Board members will understand the techniques and be able to have a meaningful discussion with Project Managers, and approve plans.

Both the 1 day and 2 day events are held ‘in-company’ so that we can focus on your particular environment and your current projects. As with all our courses, it is led by an experienced PRINCE practitioner not someone who is only a trainer, so you get the benefit of PRINCE consultancy advice during the day(s) as well as coverage of the method.

Who should attend this course?

Any manager who already has a role on the Project Board for a PRINCE2 project, or who expects to take a role. No previous knowledge of PRINCE is assumed - even for those already on boards!

Duration

The 1 day version of this course works through the timescale of a PRINCE project after first explaining the basics of the method. It focuses on key points of involvement, responsibilities and Project Board decision making.

The 2 day version covers the same ground, but adds sessions on product and activity planning for board members who are not familiar with these techniques. If board members are to have a meaningful dialogue with Project Managers and are to understand the plans they are agreeing to then they must be familiar with these approaches.

PRINCE2 for Senior Managers

Senior managers in most organisations would react with some energy if an area of their business was not being run professionally or if large amounts of money were being wasted. However, for many organisations this does not include their projects. It is often the case that even in very well run, large scale businesses projects are something of an exception. Things are not done professionally – just look at the instances of project failure resulting from known problems – and large amounts of money can be wasted in bureaucratic approaches, unnecessary procedures and unnecessary project delay.

The Inspirandum briefing for senior managers shows just how PRINCE can be used to excellent effect to help drive projects forward, sometimes very rapidly. If you have a project due to save $25 million a year, presumably you would like to see it brought in as quickly as possible provided that does not compromise quality or introduce unacceptable levels of risk. We show you just how PRINCE can work to help deliver your projects professionally and so achieve organisational objectives.

We argue that to be worth doing, PRINCE has to ‘earn its keep’. That means senior managers must make sure that it is applied sensibly in the organisation and undertake sufficient supervision to make sure that has been done. Project management is an important area of business and we show how PRINCE can help your staff be just as professional about project management as your accounts staff are about the organisation’s finances.

In turn that means understanding and support from the top. Unless your accounts staff know that you take organisational accounting seriously, you cannot expect them to take the work seriously and do the job well. So then with projects and PRINCE2.

Who should attend this course?

The PRINCE2 for Senior Managers Briefing is suitable for senior managers who want to know what PRINCE2 is, why it is being suggested or used in their organisation and what the business benefits are of using it. It is suitable for groups of 3 up to 25, but for best interaction we recommend a maximum of around 12.

Duration

This briefing can be run in between 1 and 2 hours. Clearly, the closer it is to 2 hours then the more it can be explained and the more opportunity there will be for important discussion on the implications for the organisation. It can also be run as a lunchtime event which has proved helpful where senior managers need to hear about PRINCE in the short term but have very full diaries.

PRINCE2 Overview

This 'short day' course is run on your own site so that it can be focused on your specific projects. It explains not only what PRINCE2 is, but also how it is justified in dealing with the major known causes of project problems as well as providing a powerful toolkit to make planning and controlling projects easier.

Most of the day is explanation of what PRINCE2 is and how it works, but there is room for discussion and also a short practical session that shows just why PRINCE2 planning is so effective.

As with all our events, we will not just send ‘a trainer’ but rather an experienced practitioner who can fully explain how the method can be used to best effect. Our presenter will always be happy to answer questions and give advice during the day on using PRINCE2 on specific projects and to stay on at the end of the event to explain more, so you also get the advantage of experienced PRINCE2 consultancy advice.

Who should attend this course?

The PRINCE2 Overview is suitable for all staff who want to know what PRINCE is about and particularly how it can benefit projects in their organisation. It is suitable for groups of 4 up to 50, but for best interaction we recommend a maximum of around 25.

Duration

The course runs for a 'short day', typically 10 am to 4 pm with 45 minutes for lunch. This gives staff an opportunity to clear urgent work matters at the beginning and end of the day. The start time can easily be adjusted so if you prefer 8 to 2 that is fine.

Adjusting the course content

While the event is designed to cover the whole method and the reasoning behind it, there is still scope for emphasising particular points and including some extra detail where this is of particular interest in the setting of your organisation. We will talk to you before the event to make sure that it is targeted precisely to meet your environment and objectives.

The PRINCE Overview can be delivered in a shorter time but clearly the content is reduced. To achieve good value for money by those attending having a clear understanding, we have found that the 6 hour 'short day' is ideal.

Wanting more detail than a 'short day'?

If you are looking for an event with more time for discussion and in-depth explanation (including how the PRINCE2 planning techniques work) but not the full PRINCE2 Practitioner course, then we can also run a 2 day event which includes more detail and some teaching on the powerful project planning approach.

PRINCE2 Refresher

The Inspirandum PRINCE2 Practitioner course is a highly effective and intensive event teaching you the detail of the method but also how to apply it intelligently and effectively on projects. It is delivered at a full practitioner level of detail, but is also suitable for those wanting to take the Foundation Exam only. Everyone leaves with a full understanding of the method, even if they choose not to go on to the Practitioner Exam.

The course is intensive (but with some fun too!). It is designed as a non-residential event, but personal evening study is required to consolidate each day's material - most people need some 1½ to 2 hours each evening. It can be run in the same format residentially with personal evening study.

Pre-Course Work

There is some pre-course study, but this is deliberately limited in quantity and is low key. It is presented on a CD ROM with a 15 minute overview of the method, then a 'point and click' exploration section that takes about an hour. We recommend going through the point and click a couple of times in the week before the course. It is emphasised that you only need to read this material, not learn it. We want it to be enjoyable and simply provide a framework of understanding. We reject the common approach of requiring up to 24 hours study of the manual before the course for 2 reasons. First, it is very dry and if you could really learn it that effectively from the manual you wouldn’t need a course! The second reason is that study of the manual alone tends to lead to misunderstandings (particularly around the area of how to apply the method) which just waste time on the course in unlearning and relearning.

Who should attend this course?

All those who need to know PRINCE2 in detail and how to use it. This includes Project Managers, project support staff and even Project Board members where their project is large or they will be serving on the boards of a number of projects and need to fully understand the method. No prior knowledge of PRINCE2 is needed - we start from the 'ground floor'.

Duration

The course runs for 4 days and this includes time for the Foundation Examination. The Practitioner Exam is held on an optional 5th day (Friday). The full detail of the method is covered in the 4 days of the event, equipping delegates to be able to use the method on projects as well as to tackle both the Foundation and Practitioner Examinations.

The 5th day is entirely Practitioner Exam focussed, unlike the previous 4 days. It is in the form of a Practitioner exam workshop in the morning with the PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam following in the afternoon. The workshop gives more detailed guidance on tackling exam questions, provides the latest information on the type of questions being asked and revises key topics that come up frequently in the Practitioner exam.

PRINCE2 Workshops

It is easy to lose time on projects and most people are familiar with the scenario that something that should have taken just a few days has turned out to be several days longer, or even weeks longer, than anticipated. It is important to move fast on projects. Any delay not only drives up the cost of the project which can be expensive, but also knocks on to the completion date of the project thereby delaying getting the business benefits on stream, which can be extremely expensive.

Inspirandum workshops are there to help you work quickly, get the job done and move on. It is like having an experienced colleague working alongside you. We typically work in the areas of project start up to help produce a Project Brief, in planning to help with the Product Planning especially where we have long experience and particular expertise, and with risk analysis to help work through project risks and think through suitable countermeasures. But if you have other needs, please do talk to us as we may be able to help.

A workshop to deal with a live project can be combined with training if you wish. This way we can use your project as a way of passing on skills that will help in the future as well as driving that particular project forward.

Who should attend these workshops?

The workshops are for any staff involved with that part of the work of the project. They tend to work best with up to about 12 people, but we are also experienced in running very much larger ones where there is a need to have a wider range of people involved. Inspirandum works worldwide with English speaking audiences or with translation.

Delivery

The workshops are run ‘in company’ to focus on a particular project or set of projects. An event is normally between 1 and 3 days depending on the exact needs that you have. We will talk through your needs and the timing of the workshop to make sure it meets your requirements. We can be very flexible and are used to working with small groups of just 3 or 4 up to much larger events with 40 or 50 people. Normally smaller groups are better in terms of interaction as some people don’t join in so well in larger ones, but we have conducted very successful larger workshops, sometimes by breaking them into smaller groups for part of the time.

The event can be run in your own conference or training facility or at a commercial conference venue. Unless you can be sure of an uninterrupted environment, this event will almost certainly be more effective run somewhere outside the company’s own premises so that those attending can focus and make the very best use of time.

Where the workshop covers training as well as hands-on project work, we will provide a copy of that training material for each person attending. The costs of this will be explained when we talk through the requirements for the event.
